Anavila Presents ‘The Sari in Us’ at Lakme Fashion Week 2016

There was a distinctly contemporary approach to Anavila Misra’s collection this season. While there were loosely-draped linen saris aplenty (as well as kurtas and midi dresses), it was all styled in a modern and fresh way, with a mix of layers, prints and colours. Trousers peeked out from under calf-length saris, wool sweaters and silk jackets were worn over sari blouses, and maxi dresses and skirts were layered over each other at different lengths.

The colours, as Misra usually favours, were on the earthy side (think burnt gold, dusty pink, rust and faded blue) while the prints this season ranged from polka dots and stripes to florals and checks, all the better for mixing and matching.

Pleated floral trousers under a checkered sari with a slouchy knit and brogues: why not? There’s probably no better way to present the sari to millennials in a language they understand.
